What Happens To Unprotected Concrete Driveways, And How To Protect Yours

BLOG Posts

Concrete is the most popular surface material in the world for one main reason: It lasts.

Compared to alternative surfaces like asphalt or gravel, concrete is the king of durability. If installed correctly, a concrete driveway, walkway or slab should last a solid 30 years.

But while concrete is incredibly durable, it is not invincible. Damaging substances like dirt, grime, oil, and most importantly, water, can penetrate the concrete and cause it to crack, split, and flake. On top of that, these substances if left unaddressed will cause discoloration and staining on the top.

To put it bluntly, not only will unprotected concrete start to break, it’ll be ugly! And once the cracking and/or discoloration begins, it becomes harder and harder to reverse.

The good news is that concrete is fairly easy (and affordable) to protect.

The substances that do the most harm to your concrete do their damage by penetrating the surface. So, the method experts use to protect their concrete is by simply applying a protective coat on top of the surface which works like a shield, keeping the harmful substances from ever getting to the concrete.

This process is called “concrete sealing”, and thousands of homeowners do it every year to help keep their concrete clean, beautiful, and strong.

Because this concrete is sealed, the water never penetrates the surface.

Depending on the size of your concrete area, most sealing projects can be done in a single day and will last 12-24 months (depending on traffic). The best part is that properly sealed concrete will typically last 15-20 years longer than unprotected concrete, and will certainly look much nicer.

Compare this small investment with the price of repairing or replacing your driveway, sidewalk, or patio, which typically costs homeowners thousands of dollars even for a small area (less than 500 square feet), and the smart choice becomes obvious.

It is never too early or too late to start protecting your concrete. A little care now will go a long way down the road.
